In 2015 Mel retired from his partnership in the law firm of Sidley Austin LLP where he had been an attorney since 1987. Prior to attending law school, Mel received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago and taught at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He also worked full-time as a paramedic/firefighter for nine years. Mel is currently a student in The Second City Training Center, where he studies script writing and improv performance. He and his wife Pam have lived in the Lincoln Park and Lake View neighborhoods since 1987.
