Jan trained as a Psychiatric Social Worker, receiving her MSW from the University of Michigan after which she practiced for a decade as a clinician at Children’s Psychiatric Hospital and the University’s Psychiatric Clinic. During that time she developed a private practice specializing in intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After moving to Chicago, she sold real estate in Hyde Park, trained at Charlie Trotter’s as a dessert chef, and taught at Sur La Table and Williams Sonoma. Beginning in 2005, Jan joined the American Saddlebred Horse circuit, riding her own horse in 4 consecutive national champion events. She is the author of A Baker’s Walk Through New York City (unpublished), bringing together recipes from a dozen pastry kitchens in Manhattan. She has been a board member of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists, and a volunteer for Y-Me, the (former) breast cancer charity. She lives in Kenwood with her husband and 6 pound Chihuahua Bitsy.
