Caring for a person with dementia is a demanding task. Beginning on September 11 and for nine more Wednesdays, the Village will offer a support group for care partners for people with dementia. The core text for the program will be The Dementia Care Partner’s Workbook, a book written by Dr. Edward Shaw, based on his experience as a care partner for his wife, Rebecca, and based on his experience with a pilot program he designed and tested at the Wake Forest Medical Center in North Carolina. As much as possible you should expect to commit to all ten sessions. Each session will provide relevant information, opportunities for personal reflection, and a safe environment for examining painful issues collaboratively. The curriculum is built around what Ed Shaw has found to be the eight central needs of dementia care partners. For most of us this is a journey we did not choose. It helps to have companions along the way. The program will be led by Village member, Bruce Hunt, who is himself a care partner. In addition, Artis Senior Living will provide an alternative activity for anyone who may want to bring their partner with them through the series.
- Reservations required for all events.
- The Village aims to match participating members by request to Village events when other members who are attending the event are able to provide transportation. When registering, please let the Village office know if you are able to drive or would like a ride to an event.
