Walt Disney invented the full-length animated feature film when he produced “Snow White” (1937) (fully restored Platinum edition). By 1933 Disney had advanced the art of the musical cartoon as far as it could go. (e.g., “The Three Little Pigs”). To make a feature film, he expanded and reinvented his production facilities and techniques, hired crowds of young illustrators and organized an in-house graduate school of animation. The final product still takes your breath away. The songs (“Hi-ho, Hi-ho”) and characters (“Mirror, mirror on the wall…”) have endured for eighty years. Today, most Americans have never seen the film, but they can still name (or try to name) the Seven Dwarfs. Time permitting, after the film, we’ll watch a fifteen-minute history of the making of the film.
