Widow Aurora Greenway (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter, Emma (Debra Winger), have a strong bond, but Emma marries teacher Flap Horton (Jeff Daniels) against her mother’s wishes. Adapted from Larry McMurtry’s 1975 novel, and directed, written, and produced by James L. Brooks, this film took home the Best Picture Oscar in 1984.
