A History of Memoir Writing at the Village
In 2011, the popular weekly memoir-writing class Village member Myrna Knepler attended at the Chicago Cultural Center grew so large that it had a waiting list to get in. That gave Myrna an idea. She asked the teacher, Beth Finke, if she might be willing to lead a class for The Village Chicago.
Susan Squires, another Village member who was in Beth’s downtown class, offered to host a free introductory class in her Lincoln Park home. The event was a success, and The Village Chicago Thursday Memoir Class started in September, 2011 with Myrna as its ambassador.
The Thursday Memoir Class filled up quickly, and recognizing growing interest in memoir-writing , the Village started a second class on Mondays. Hugh Brodkey has been the Monday Memoir Class ambassador since it started, and Beth Finke continues to lead both classes.
As one of our most popular and long-running programs, the Memoir Groups are often wait-listed. The Village Chicago is a membership organization and members receive priority for all programs. If you would like to join this program, please call the Village office at 773.248.8700 to inquire about availability.
- Reservations required for all events.
- The Village aims to match participating members by request to Village events when other members who are attending the event are able to provide transportation. When registering, please let the Village office know if you are able to drive or would like a ride to an event.
