LGBTA Book Discussion: Giovanni’s Room

Wednesday, August 5 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Free

Members & guests–free. Registered attendees will receive details to join the discussion via Zoom. To RSVP, please scroll down.

The LGBTA Committee of the Village seeks ways to bring their programs and recommendations for the activities of ally organizations to a wider Village audience. In that spirit, the Committee is proposing a book discussion/club that would focus on discussions of classic LGBTA fiction. It is believed that fiction can create a platform for people to discuss a topic, in this case LGBTA issues, in a positive, non-threatening atmosphere. The purpose, of course, is to create a wider understanding of LGBTA issues, including history, prejudice, discrimination, life styles, protest movements, etc. among members of the Village who might want to develop a more in depth understanding of the Gay community in all its diversity.

The first book to be discussed is James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room, published in 1956. Baldwin is considered one of the most important writers of the 20th. century. His books appear on all lists of great American literature. Giovanni’s Room is still in print and is available in libraries and in several formats.
Baldwin’s book will be discussed at a zoom meeting at 4:00 pm on August 5. This will give interested Village members ample time to read the book. The meeting will be hosted by Peggy Walker, chair of the LGBTA Committee, and the discussion will be led by Bill Gordon, a member of the Committee. If this meeting and discussion are successful, we will continue with the discussion of an appropriate book every two months.
We invite you to sign up for this discussion, and welcome you to what will surely be a lively and informative meeting.
