This program is presented by the Village Near North Circle, but is open to any members of the Village. Want to recapture a little of the old days, when you could sit on the front porch, talk with your friends, and meet your new neighbors? The Front Porch Discussion Group will bring a little of that feeling to our currently isolated life situations. Members connect with each other virtually through Zoom and discuss a topic of general interest. The meeting is designed so you also can meet some new virtual neighbors and get more human-to-human contact.
The topic for this discussion is “Illinois Justice Reform Bill – Leap Forward or Disaster?” The Illinois Justice Reform Omnibus Bill, passed on January 13, is monumental – a massive attempt to solve many persistent problems with our justice system in one bill. Among other goals, it prescribes solutions to prevent excessive police killings of blacks specifically including the situations of Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, George Floyd, LaQuan McDonald, Quintonio LeGrier, etc. It also attempts to dissolve the “Blue Wall” of silence, to restore the ability to root out racist policing, and to fix the processes that excessively incarcerate Blacks, other minorities, and those in poverty. In fact, the list of issues the bill addresses with specific changes is so broad that we can’t possibly understand the entire bill within 60 minutes. Rather, the objective is to catch a glimpse of its sweeping scope and the solutions it offers. We expect to see conflict on these provisions in media, in elections, and in all justice reform efforts often over the next several years. Come and get a glimpse of a potentially more just future, and its possible pitfalls.
The discussions are all casual; specialized knowledge is not required. Come and increase your human-to-human connections during these exceptional times. Pre-registration is mandatory and space is limited to 20 members.
- Reservations required for all events.
- The Village aims to match participating members by request to Village events when other members who are attending the event are able to provide transportation. When registering, please let the Village office know if you are able to drive or would like a ride to an event.
