Explore this site-specific installation — presented by Alphawood Exhibitions and organized by the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden — of one of the renowned Chinese artist’s most significant projects in recent years. Trace is a monumental work comprising nearly one million individual LEGO® bricks arranged to depict women and men from around the world whom the artist considers activists, prisoners of conscience, or advocates of free speech. It was shaped by Ai’s own experiences as a prisoner of the Chinese government. Trace in Chicago includes 113 of the original 176 portraits, arranged on the floor in multiple zones spread throughout the building, with additional portraits represented through wall graphics and digital kiosks.
Please note: the Village is a membership organization and members receive priority for all events. If this event becomes over-subscribed, non-members will be added to our wait list.
